Regent University School of Law Professor Lynne Marie Kohm was in Austin, Texas last Friday  presenting on the topic of Parental Rights and the Constitutionalization of Familiesat the Southern Political Science Association’s annual conference. The presentation, which Kohm has also used as part of her Family Law course at Regent, considered how courts may be amending their approach to parental rights, traditionally protected by the doctrine of substantive due process, suggesting that rulings on marriage and children have altered how we think about rights and duties between family members. The presentation ultimately argued that the relationship between a parent and child is a constitutionally protected liberty interest which deserves renewed protection.

Kohm attended the conference at the invitation of the Austin Institute for the Study of Family and Culture and presented at their panel on The Family and Politics Today. Kohm has achieved national recognition for her Christian perspective on family law and legal matters affecting women and children. The conference represented an opportunity to share her scholarly viewpoint and engage other family policy experts in a cross-disciplinary context: “Discussing the inalienability of parental rights at this Austin Institute Conference at the Southern Political Science Association with political scholars across the country was not only insightful but particularly cooperative as Christian lawyers and academics considering how best to protect children, parents, and family strength moving forward in America.”
